First Flight of SIFF

Following a thorough review of the safety case for the Raytheon Successor IFF (Interrogator Friend or Foe) system, which incorporates the SES Control and Display Unit (C3DU), a green light was given for flight trials to commence in January 2003.

The system equipment was installed in a RAF BAe 125 aeroplane of 32 (The Royal) Squadron for its first four-hour test flight on 10th January.

The system successfully completed the test flight with QinetiQ flight Trials Management providing the system interrogation from their Malvern facility.

This was the first operational installation of the Raytheon transponder and SES CDU. Around 1000 platforms will be fitted with the system in the next four years.
