SES: ARINC - VHF Datalink Mode-4 Simulation
Working with Helios Technology for ARINC, SES developed a full SARP compliant VHF
Data Link Mode 4 Simulation model using the OPNET modelling tool, from Mil3. The
tool allows ARINC to investigate the VDL Mode 4 standard using large (up to 500
aircraft) realistic scenarios.
The tools uses include investigation of network loading, network planning, datalink
capacity estimation and has already been successfully used to investigate net entry
and transmission delays in the presence of high datalink traffic. Results derived
from the tool are being fed back into the worldwide SARP validation process.
The model is implemented in the OPNET communications modelling and planning tool
which provides the infrastructure in which the tool operates.
Various modelling optimisations were undertaken during the development to ensure
that the model was able to operate efficiently in a broadcast environment in which
up to 500 modelled aircraft could simultaneously receive all broadcasts made by
a given platform, every 10 milliseconds.
The tool was well received by ARINC and is regularly used to support investigation
of Mode-4 issues.
